SaxophoneSmearing is often incorporated in saxophone improvisations. It is the technique of loosening the embouchure while slightly dropping the jaw. The change in the embouchure position can affect the beginning and ending of a note and how adjacent notes relate to each other.
Vibrato is a technique that causes your sound to waver in pitch and is controlled by the player with the amount of air and the shape of their embouchure. Altissimo is a technique that explores high registers that exceeds the normal pitch range. Extended technique in general refers to the performance or improvisation technique that is use to describe unconventional or non-traditional techniques of playing any musical instrument to explore unusual instrumental timbres. Examples of saxophone extended technique can be slap tongue, which is an alternate method of tonguing against the reed, producing a popping sound effect. Another example can be flutter tonguing which is a tonguing technique in which the player flutters their tongue to make a characteristic “FrrrrFrrrr” sound. Growling is a woodwind technique where the performer vocalises into the instrument to alter the sound quality. It gives the sound a dark, guttural and gritty timbre giving it a dissonance effect. |

DrumIn percussion music, a rudiment is one of a number of relatively small patterns, which form the foundation for more extended and complex rhythm patterns. A flam is a commonly used drum rudiment which is a drumbeat consisting of two almost simultaneous strokes of which the first rapidly precedes another. Variations of the flam technique include; flam accent, flam tap, flamacue, single flammed mill, flam paradiddle and flam paradiddle-diddle.
